Rugby: Rovers overwhelm Varsity

2011-06-08 00:00

A COLLEGE Rovers line-up that included all their big guns ran rampant against Maritzburg Varsity at King’s Park 3 in Durban on Saturday.

Yet Varsity did not actually play badly in the KZN Premier Division clash against the SA and KZN club champions.

As Varsity head coach Beans Batemen told The Witness yesterday: “I couldn’t have asked for more. There was a nice contingent of Varsity Old Boys watching the game and they also commended the guys on a courageous performance in the face of a helluva Rovers squad.

“It was 31-0 just after half-time and we came close to scoring three tries in the match, but with 10 minutes left they added three converted tries.”

Rovers scored eight well-worked tries and Sharks centre Riaan Swanepoel touched down first after 10 minutes.

Sharks hooker Craig Burden, wingers Luzuko Vulindlu and Jors Dannhauser, replacement Anton Verster, promising U21 flanker Brynard Stander, his team-mate on the other side of the scrum, Juan Language, and fullback Kobus de Kock scored the tries with the number 15 also adding six conversions.

Title challengers Durban Collegians sounded out a warning that Varsity will have their hands full at the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road on Saturday with a 61-9 victory over disjointed bottom club Jaguars.

Collegians wings Quinton Dormehl and Kyle Hartley, as well as Rovers flank Kosie Haarhof, are the three top Premier Division try-scorers, while Old Boys winger Dean Stow is chasing hard.

Third-placed Old Boys beat hosts Harlequins 29-20, while the Zululand Rhinos lost 10-35 to Durban in the Ebbo Bastard Inter-Sub-Union Trophy.

In KZN club women’s rugby, Jaguars, Midlands and Rovers are in the title race. In the recent round at Harlequins, the Rovers beat Zululand 14-0 and Midlands beat Rovers 18-0. The next round will be played in Pietermaritzburg.
