Rugby: Sharks won’t be playing Super?14 games at Moses Mabhida stadium next year, says CEO

THE Sharks will not be playing any of their Super 14 games at the new Moses Mahbida Stadium next year, writes JOHN BISHOP.

Following reports yesterday that the Sharks would be moving to the new World Cup stadium next year, CEO Brian van Zyl issued a statement denying any planned switch.

Van Zyl said that the venue for all the Sharks’ home games in the Super 14 in 2010 will be King’s Park.

“I would like to reiterate what I said last year, that we are still in ongoing discussions with the Durban City and, at this point no decision has been made whether or not to move across to the new stadium. For a decision to be made, we would need to have in-depth consultations with all the stakeholders, together with our equity partner SuperSport.”

Van Zyl said the eThekwini council has requested that the Sharks play a friendly early next year at the new stadium “in order to try out the field conditions”.

“At this stage, nothing has been confirmed as we would still need to determine where we will be playing our pre-season warm-up games for the 2010 Super 14,” he said.
