Runaway truck in close call

2011-03-09 00:00

AN unidentified truck driver and his assistant escaped with minor injuries after the brakes of the vehicle failed on the N3 near the Chatterton on-ramp yesterday morning.

The truck was en route from Benoni to King Shaka International to deliver a load of medical chest drainage kits.

Senior traffic officer Mbongiseni Nkabinde said that when the truck’s brakes failed down Town Hill, the driver opted to cross over the N3 median to exit via the Chatterton on-ramp.

The driver avoided a major collision on the highway by taking a gap to get off the N3, Nkabinde said. “Things could have been worse had he proceeded on the N3 towards the new bridge [at Chota Motala Road].”

In a report on another vehicle collision there in yesterday’s Witness, paramedics described the construction site as “an accident waiting to happen”.

The truck ended up on its side near the Chatterton traffic circle after what the tow-in operator described as “some very brave driving”.

Armitage Road joining Chatterton was closed for several hours while a recovery truck pulled the stricken vehicle upright.

The driver and co-driver are in a stable condition in Grey’s Hospital.
