Runners fight it out for top prize money

2008-06-10 00:00

Joshua Sabad won a tough struggle for honours and top prize money in the Bluff Meat Formula One 20-km race held on North Coast Road on Sunday.

The Mr Price athlete was part of a massive pack of over 20 runners who headed up the North Coast Road before dropping down Nandi Drive to the halfway point.

The leaders were stretched on the climb back from Ronaldo Road with five athletes all still within striking distance. Sabad, Thubalethu Phaku and Elmore Sibanda kept the pace on the boil as one by one athletes became strung out, but with prize money to 10th place, none were willing to sacrifice positions.

Once more, the final climb to the Bluff Meat Centre proved to be the telling factor with Sabad ensuring that Phaku was too far adrift for a late challenge. Sabad secured the R2 000 first prize in 62 minutes and 36 seconds with Phaku just over 150 metres behind, gaining the edge over Boxer’s Elmore Sibanda.

Having won the Savages Mondi 21 km a fortnight before, Zimbabwe’s Olympic marathon runner, Tabitha Tsatsa, made another coastal trip and was unchallenged in the women’s race, taking line honours in 70 minutes and 53 seconds.

Although a distance behind the 20-km leaders on the first lap, Durban University of Technology’s Sujabonga Nkonde led the 10-km runners to top the podium in 31 minutes and 18 seconds — over a minute ahead of Mr Price’s Hlomani Maclean, who only managed to drop Sipho Ngxongo in the last kilometres.

Chatsworth’s Bongekile Hlongwane stole the show in the women’s race with a 41 minute and 50 second finish.
