Running a little low on power? Google Naps may have the answer

2014-03-31 00:00

FEEL like dozing off for a while? Google Naps can help you.

If you have ever been in urgent need of a power nap but did not know where you could go to doze off, then Google Naps is precisely the website you need.

Google Naps ( is based on the popular Google Maps online maps, but also allows users to point out on a world map where the best places are to take a quick nap. said while Google has not been involved with the actual design of the website, it supports Google Naps because Google has “long been in favour of naps”.

South Africans will however have to get a lot more active to make the local website more useful.

There is currently — in the whole of Gauteng — only one suggested sleep-site which is mapped at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg.

Capetonians have warmed to the idea much quicker and marked a number of napping places, such as a bench in the Cape Town Gardens next to Parliament, the lawn on the big traffic circle in Woodstock, a bench at Crawford Station, a bench in a “very quiet street” in Rustdale and a bench outside the Phoenix Secondary School, which, however, according to one Hendrik is a dangerous place — someone sleeping there could be raped.

Among other places South African citizens have singled out as good sleeping spots is a piece of land adjoining the Midmar Dam in KwaZulu-Natal and “Rob’s bed” outside Howick.

Another sleeping spot, which has perhaps been established more as a warning sign than a recommendation of where to doze off, is on a bridge across the side channel of the Great Fish River, north-east of Somerset East, where one @tamer316 wrote:

“OK, here you will definitely be raped, whether you are sleeping or not.”

What is abundantly clear, is the wisdom of inspecting any suggested sleeping spots very carefully before deciding where to close your eyes.
