Rural KZN has third highest number of murders, robbery in SA

RESIDENTS of rural areas in KwaZulu-Natal are at increased risk of being murdered and robbed an SA Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) study revealed yesterday.

The institute said that KZN has the third highest number of serious crimes after the Eastern Cape and Free State.

“A person in South Africa has the highest likelihood of being murdered in the Cacadu District municipality of the Eastern Cape, sexually assaulted in the Xhariep District of the Free State, violently robbed personally or at their business premises in the city of Johannesburg, and is most vulnerable to attack if they own a home in the Metsweding District of Gauteng,” said the SAIRR.

It conducted its research in 46 district municipalities and six metropolitan municipalities between 2009 and 2010.

The full report of the investigation will be released in Johannesburg next week.

The research focused on murder, aggravated robbery, sexual offences, and drug-related crime and robberies at business and residential premises.

It found that, of the 10 district municipalities with the highest murder rates, three of them are in rural areas of the Eastern Cape, one in the Free State, and five in KZN.

The Cacadu District Municipality in Eastern Cape and Xhariep District Municipality in Free State had the first and second highest rates of murder respectively. The two districts also have the highest incidence of sexual offences, the report said.

Districts with rural municipalities that are in the top 10 for robberies are Ilembe and Uthungulu in KZN, Motheo in Free State, Bojanala Platinum in North West, Xhariep, Bojanala and Ehlanzeni in Mpumalanga.

“eThekwini Metropolitan municipality in KwaZulu-Natal had the third highest murder rate out of all the profiled municipalities, while Ekurhuleni had the lowest murder rate when compared to other metros,” the report said.

Municipalities with the six highest rates of drug-related crime are all in the Western Cape.

The City of Johannesburg had the highest rates of aggravated and business robberies, and the second highest rate of residential robbery — after the Metsweding District municipality.

All six metros were included in the list of 10 areas with the worst rates of aggravated robbery.

Raw figures from the South African Police Force and population figures from the South African Local Government Association were used by the institute to calculate the municipalities’ crime rates per 100 000 people.
