SA Post Office steps in to sponsor Mandela Day Marathon

2014-08-19 00:00

JUST 15 days prior to the running of the Mandela Day Marathon on August 31, the South African Post Office has announced that it will sponsor R500 000 towards the race.

“The partnership with uMgungundlovu Municipality signifies the Post Office’s shared interest in preserving our history and heritage,” said Lungile Lose, group executive for the Post Office in the KZN region.

The marathon starts at Manayi Hall in Imbali, where Madiba made his last speech at the All-in-Africa conference in 1961, and will end at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site where he was captured at a roadblock a year later.

“The sponsorship contract is a three-year partnership. However, uMgungundlovu’s District mayor prefers this mutual and beneficial relationship to go way beyond the third year,” said Lose.

District Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said the Post Office was “breaking virgin ground and setting a good example to other corporate entities” in partnering with one of the best performing district municipalities in KZN, adding “together we can do more”.

The municipality is expecting a few more sponsors to come on board.
