SA U19 in triangular series

2012-01-10 00:00

THE South African U19 side will be led in the triangular series against Pakistan and Zimbabwe by the most experienced player in the squad, Quinton de Kock of the Highveld Lions.

De Kock, who left King Edward VII School at the end of 2010, represented the South African Schools’ side in 2010 and also made his senior franchise debut for the Lions in this season’s (2011/12) Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) one-day competition. The squad was announced at the conclusion of the CSA Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch.

Besides the squad of 15, which will be in action in the triangular series, another eight players will join the squad at the national academy in Pretoria in preparation for the ICC U19 World Cup in Australia.

There are three Dolphin’s players in the team. SA School’s player Calvin Savage, who has just finished his matric at Maritzburg College; Prenelan Subrayen, who has just finished at Glenwood and captained the recently announced SA Schools side following the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola week in Stellenbosch; and Chad Bowes, who finished at Kearsney at the end of 2010.

Strangely, the Knights who did not win a game at the Cubs week, have three players selected and the Highveld Lions, who just lost the one game, only two players. The selectors did not, however, base selection on only performances at the week but also on potential. For the triangular series that will take place shortly, players who are in form are more likely to perform than those who did not have a good week with bat or ball.

Ten of the players selected have already seen action for the SA U19 side when they toured England last year.
