SA U19 trounce England

2012-08-21 00:00

THE South African U19 cricket team playing in the World Championships in Queensland, Australia, beat England in the quarter-finals on Sunday morning, after winning all three pool matches. These were against Bangladesh, Namibia and Sri Lanka.

The match in Townsville was expected to be a tough one, as the conditions there were more familiar to England as they had played some games there. SA lost the toss and was asked to bat, making it even more difficult. Captain Chad Bowes was the only one of the top three who stayed for any length of time and when he was out for 46 with the score on 82/3, SA was in a spot of bother.

Murray Coetzee, together with Theunis de Bruyn, added 96 for the fourth wicket. Coetzee, lucky to survive a dropped catch, ended on 67 and de Bruyn on 54.

The next six wickets fell relatively cheaply and they were all out off the penultimate ball of the innings, for 244.

England also lost an early wicket to Lizaad Williams, but Ben Foakes and Alex Davies took the total to 102 before Prenelan Subrayen broke the partnership, removing Foakes for 54. He captured a further three wickets and England slumped to 141 all out in the 40th over. Calvin Savage, although capturing only one wicket, built pressure from the one end taking one for 16 in 7 overs. England had lost their last nine wickets for just 39 runs. Subrayen ended with 4/24 in his 10 overs and SA won convincingly by 103 runs.
