SA a possible venue for Aussie, Pakistan series

2012-05-22 00:00

CAPE TOWN — South Africa is reportedly among three options being considered by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their supposed “home” series against Australia in August later this year.

ESPN cricket website, Cricinfo, has reported that the PCB is exploring the possibility of any of South Africa, Zimbabwe or Malaysia staging the matches, which will probably involve five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches.

Pakistan have not been able to stage series at home since 2009 because of security concerns, and normally relied on the United Arab Emirates subsequently as an alternative venue.

But temperatures in August get unbearably hot there, ruling out cricket as a viable option.

South Africa would have weather issues of its own at that time of the year, with the Western Cape still in its wet winter season, Highveld pitches only decently prepared if spring has taken root early there and KwaZulu-Natal thus arguably the only realistic option.

Malaysia last featured top-tier international cricket in 2006, when the country hosted a triangular involving India, Australia and West Indies in Kuala Lumpur.
