CAPE TOWN — Western Cape Boxing have learnt with “deep sadness” of the death of Anele Makhwelo “from subsequent injuries sustained after his South African flyweight title challenge” against the champion, Doctor

Ntsele, in the Free State on Friday.

Boxing SA’s Western Cape provincial manager Andile Klaas said in a statement: “At the end of the ninth round [Makhwelo] told his trainer, Zola Koti, of a pain in the left leg. A ringside physician was called in to assess the situation. The physician immediately ordered paramedics to take him to hospital, where doctors discovered a blood clot in one of the arteries in the brain and had to urgently perform brain surgery to remove it.

“He had been in a coma since the operation until his untimely death”.
