SA celebs rough it on ‘Survivor’

2010-01-16 00:00

WHAT do a gladiator, an exotic dancer and a fashion designer have in common? They’re all bidding to raise R500 000 for their favourite charities by winning M-Net’s newest show, Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina.

The difference between this version of the popular reality show and previous ones, is that the contestants include a host of well-known faces from the country’s entertainment industry. Mind you, when I first glanced at the list sent to me by M-Net, I did wonder who some of them were …

Among those competing are two Durbanites: actor and comedian Kaseran Pillay and television presenter, Sade Giliberti.

Pillay has appeared in stage shows like Those Indian Guys and Abbamaniacs, the film Mr Bones 2, and television shows like Going Nowhere Slowly, Bay of Plenty, On the Couch and Innocent Times. His chosen charity is the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Giliberti is best known for presenting children’s shows on the SABC1’s YOTV and as the host of the South African version of the dance reality competition, So You Think You Can Dance. Her chosen charity is Childline.

The pair will be competing against:

• former Miss South Africa and Strictly Come Dancing star, Cindy Nell-Roberts;

• actress and television presenter Ashley Hayden;

• Garth Collins, Granite in Gladiators and an actor, who appeared in the films Mr Bones and Mercenary with Steven Seagal;

• Izak Davel, who played Scab in M-Net soap Egoli;

• South African model-turned-actress Christina Storm;

• Gys de Villiers, an actor who has appeared in SABC2’s 7de Laan and Binnelanders on M-Net;

• actress Sandi Schultz, best known for her role as Dr Jennifer Adams in Binnelanders;

• Okkert Brits, the former South African pole vaulting champion;

• comedian and actor Darren Maule best known for his role as Grant Fletcher in the SABC3 drama series Hard Copy;

• actress Hanna Grobler, who has appeared on Doen Met ‘n Miljoen and Askies;

• actor and comedian Louw Venter best known for playing Corné in The Most Amazing Show;

• fashion designer Craig Jacobs;

• hiphop artists Jub Jub and ProVerb;

• popular DJ Lady Lea; and

• exotic dancer and actress GiGi.

These 18 celebrities will be marooned on Santa Carolina, a deserted island in Mozambique, where they will be scheming, plotting and playing to be the last person standing.

New Survivor SA host, Nico Panagio, will be on hand to see just who will be strong, or smart, enough to survive the dreaded tribal council.

• Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina gets underway on M-Net and M-Net HD on Wednesday, January 20 at 7.30 pm.
