BOOK REVIEW

Jade and the Serpent’s Circle

Maggie Fikkert

Iziza Publishing

IF your young teenager is keen on fantasy novels, this is the book for him or her. South African-born Maggie Fikkert has written a captivating tale of mystery and fantasy, set in the most historically resonant place in the world, the Cradle of Humankind. This fantastical tale has its roots in France in 1816 when demonic forces, epitomised by a demon named Snake, are stirred up by a series of events. These forces impact on Jade and her twin brother Stuart almost 200 years later when a black stone is thrown through their kitchen window setting off another inevitable chain of events linked to Snake’s first outing all those years previously. The fact that this happens to the twins when they are in the most ancient of surroundings is no coincidence.

This novel is a cross between the Famous Five and Harry Potter. My children, who are in their late teens, were too old to appreciate this children’s tale. However, I think it’s perfect for the younger fans of fantasy. It’s a suitable read for any selfrespecting 11- to 14-year-old teenager. One of the best things about this novel is that it’s set in the heart of the historical birthplace of humankind which just happens to be in South Africa.
