2008-03-05 00:00

THE Resolution South Africa men’s hockey team face world champions Germany in three Tests in Potchefstroom from today.

The first Test is at 6 pm today at the superb Absa NWU-Puk hockey facility in Potchefstroom. The second Test is at the same time and venue on Friday with the third and final Test match also at the splendid hockey complex in Potchefstroom from 3.30 pm on Sunday.

Welcome additions to the Resolution SA team that picked up the wooden spoon in the Five Nations tournament in the same city in January are Darryn Gallagher of KZN Midlands and Ian Haley of Western Province.

Meanwhile, the SA U21 women’s team met the Canada senior team in an international at the Randburg Hockey Stadium yesterday afternoon.

The final score was 1-0 to Canada, with the goal coming before half time.

SA U21 coach Andrian Carolan told The Witness yesterday that the SA girls had a few changes up front, but couldn’t convert. “The SA U21 defence was outstanding with goalkeeper Hanli Hattingh and centre backs Mapule Makoena and Loreen Irvine particularly impressive.”

The 24th-ranked Canada side only lost 1-0 and drew 1-1 with the world’s 12th-ranked Spar South Africa senior squad in the Spar Cup Tri Nations over the past week at the same venue.
