SA is our home, say foreigners

2012-04-27 00:00

MANY foreigners see South Africa as their home, despite the wave of xenophobic attacks last year. They maintain it’s still safer here than in their home countries.

Moses Klozo of Howick said South Africa was his home as he had spent more than 13 years here.

“This country is home to me as we have opportunities and freedom that my home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, does not have.

“There is no democracy there,” said Klozo.

He added that most refugees have more problems in their own countries.

“I am a refugee in South Africa and we have a lot of problems. We need help getting our papers from Home Affairs.

“Most of us are running away from the wars in our countries and they want papers from us. Where should we get them from, because we fled?” said Klozo.

Mcloud Banda of Malawi said he was happy in South Africa with his family because life back home was very difficult for him.

“I am staying in Imbali township like everyone else. They don’t even know that I am not originally from South Africa. It’s been 10 years now.”
