SA movie maker turns ‘Hannibal’ into real life romance

THE corridor that links the prison cells is dark and menacing. Behind the bars, the light falls on a sombre face. The detective Beverly Katz asks the criminologist Will Graham about Hannibal Lecter’s latest murder and the face frowns.

“I don’t care about that. I have more important things to do. I want to ask Adelé to marry me …”

This was when the penny dropped for Adelé Adendorff, who suddenly recognised her boyfriend, Hermann Venter somehow acting in the Hannibal episode she and Venter were watching.

Instead of Graham’s character, the man she loved was telling the detective how much he loves Adelé and how Lecter is standing in his way.

“The scene was very dark. It was confusing, because I did not recognise the new character. But then he started talking and I realised it was Hermann and I started laughing,” a beaming Adendorff said.

Venter, of Rolling Thunder film productions, had downloaded the episode and digitally inserted himself into a scene before he settled down to surprise Adendorff.

The couple met each other while studying art three years ago and have been dating ever since.

Both enjoy the Hannibal series on-line and had a date to watch the next episode together. But after downloading the episode, Venter had used his mastery of the craft to insert himself into a suitable section. “I scripted what I wanted to say, filmed myself and worked it into the episode,” he explained.

“He looks almost like you,” Adendorff explained when Venter’s face looked up about 15 minutes into the episode.

When the lookalike on the screen told the detective how Lecter also wanted to win the heart of the “most wonderful, beautiful, passionate woman that has ever walked this earth. The love of my life”, she realised it was Venter.

Back on his couch, Venter took out the ring on cue and went down on one knee. He asked her in Afrikaans if she would marry him. Adendorff said while the prankster in her wanted to stretch out the moment by asking for time to think about it, her mouth just blurted: “Yes!”.

She has since watched the inserted scene over and over. “It is so special, it is so different,” she said.
