SA orders for Chad, Makgoba

SIX people from KwaZulu-Natal will be among the recipients of the country’s highest honours during the celebration of Freedom Day on Saturday.

The national orders are given to South Africans and foreign nationals for contributions to the advancement of democracy and community service.

Chancellor of the national orders Cassius Lubisi yesterday named African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as a recipient of the Order of Luthuli in gold for her exceptional work for the cause of freedom in South Africa and development.

The Order of Mendi will go to Riot Makhomanisi Mkhwanazi and Cletus Mmzimela for their contribution to the liberation of South Africa.

Olympic swimmer Chad le Clos will receive the Order of Ikhamanga in silver for his excellent achievements on the international swimming stage, especially at the London Olympics in 2012.

University of KwaZulu-Natal vice-chancellor Malegapuru William Makgoba will be presented with the Order of Mapungubwe in silver for his dedication and contributions to the field of science amd medicine.

Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim will receive the Order of Mapungubwe in bronze for outstanding work in HIV and TB and her role in health policy development that has placed South Africa on the international stage.
