SA skipper debate continues

2014-05-31 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Two former South African conveners of selectors have differing opinions on who the next Proteas Test captain should be.

Cricket SA are looking for a successor to Graeme Smith, who retired from international cricket this year.

The new captain will be named on Tuesday with AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy believed to be the candidates.

Mike Procter, who headed the committee from 2008 to 2010, told the ESPNcricinfo website that he’d pick De Villiers if he was still at the helm.

Rushdie Magiet, who was at the helm from 1999 to 2002, picked Amla.

Procter said De Villiers is the ultimate team man and people look up to him. He also said De Villiers would be able to lead from the front with his performances.

Magiet differed in his opinion though. He believes that apart from having a very sound knowledge of the game, Amla is very well liked and would bring the team together.
