SA through born-free eyes

2014-06-02 00:00

THREE young photographers will document 20 years of democracy in South Africa through their lenses.

Wikus de Wet and Sean Metelerkamp have already begun a four-month long road trip through the country in their camper van to visit and document the stories at several towns.

They call their project Twenty Journey.

Sipho Mpongo, also a photographer, has impressed the two with his “good energy and focus” and is touring along.

The idea started after De Wet and Metelerkamp travelled 10 days through Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom, Bothaville, Orania and Johannesburg.

They are now travelling through the rest of South Africa.

“We are very excited about stopping at all the smaller towns that most people just rush past to get from point A to point B,” said De Wet.

As young photographers with widely differing backgrounds, interests and ideas, they plan to find and tell the stories that are important to each of them.

De Wet will investigate the relationship people have with the land on which they live and work.

He said access to land remained a big problem in South Africa on an economic, social, historic and cultural level.

Metelerkamp will use street photography to show what he describes as the absurdity and diversity of South Africa.

Mpongo will focus his lens on the “born-frees” of which he is part.

Their photo and stories will be posted in audiovisual formats on

They plan to exhibit their best photos in January next year at the Commune Gallery in Cape Town.
