SA to have six teams in 2016 Super Rugby

2013-09-04 00:00

SOUTH Africa will field six teams in the Super Rugby 2016 competition, it was confirmed yesterday.

The South African Rugby Union (Saru) have pushed for the Super Rugby competition be expanded to 16 teams to accommodate all six SA franchises, including the Southern Kings who played in this year’s event at the expense of the Lions.

The Kings will not form part of next year’s event after they lost a promotion-relegation series to the Lions last month, but Saru have kept pushing Sanzar to extend the competition to 16 teams from 2016, when the new Super Rugby broadcasting deals come into effect.

Sanzar boss Greg Peters said yesterday that he could now guarantee that six South African teams would be included in a new format that has still to be discussed and finalised.

“Ideally, with the Argentine playing in the Rugby Championship, we would want to involve them in the 2016 competition, but we have still to finalise a new Super Rugby format.

“What is certain is that South Africa will have six teams,” he said.
