SA writers on Commonwealth prize shortlist

2008-02-27 00:00

Susan Mann and Carel van der Merwe have been shortlisted for the 2008 Commonwealth Writers Prizes — Africa region.

Susan Mann was nominated in the Best Book — Africa Region category for her second novel, Quarter Tones, while Carel van der Merwe’s debut novel No Man’s Land was nominated for Best First Book — Africa region.

Published by Harvill Secker, Quarter Tones explores issues of identify, guilt and belonging.

Published by Umuzi, No Man’s Land documents what happens when the past catches up with the present. The book was published simultaneously in Afrikaans by Umuzi as Nasleep and Van der Merwe wrote both editions.

The Commonwealth Writers Prize is a two-tier, two-phase award with regional winners announced first and then overall winners. Six writers compete regionally in each category — Best Novel and Best First Novel. The winners of the Africa region awards will be announced on March 14. They will then compete with the winners from the other regions (Canada and the Caribbean, Europe and South Asia, and South East Asia and South Pacific) for overall honours in May.
