SABC: R1,8 mln exit for chief people officer

2011-02-26 00:00

FORMER Gender Commissioner Pumelele Ntombela-Nzimande declined to comment on her axing from the SABC when approached by Weekend Witness yesterday.

The Mail & Guardian reported that the wife of the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, was axed in a restructuring exercise aimed at cutting costs at the public broadcaster.

According to the report, Ntombela-Nzimande, formerly from KZN, was one of the top earners at the SABC. She received an annual package of R1,7million for her position as chief people officer in the corporate affairs department. She leaves with a retrenchment package of about R1,8  million, which covers the 14 months left in her contract, plus benefits. The M&G said Ntombela-Nzimande’s position was made redundant and that she allegedly refused to go. The SABC Board instructed the acting chief executive to officially inform her in a letter that her services were no longer required.

Her axing is seen as a political move because she did not get along with the current board.

SABC sources have alleged that Ntombela-Nzimande allegedly tried to influence decisions of the board and that she lobbied people in Parliament to dissolve the current board.
