SAPS: Ginman St ‘under control’

2009-10-09 00:00

THE police have the problematic situation of taverns in Ginman Lane firmly under control, police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said yesterday.

Jeevan was responding to the allegations that the Muslim community there lives under siege because three taverns have opened in the predominantly Muslim residential area and incidents of excessive noise and drunken violence are being reported.

The complainant said the taverns have become disruptive as the residents have to contend with “all-night loud music” and patrons who often become disorderly and violent when they are drunk.

A resident, Essop Desai, told The Witness a neighbour was stabbed in the head, allegedly by patrons.

Jeevan confirmed that the police have been made aware of the problem and have taken several steps in an attempt to combat it.

She said “a number of measures have been introduced to deal with the problem”, including visible policing. “Furthermore, a police caravan has been put in the area for reporting any crime”.

Jeevan said the police have arrested a number of people on charges relating to robbery in the area.
