SA’s best take honours

2011-07-23 00:00

IT would seem fitting that two of South Africa’s best mountain bikers rode home to take the honours at the KZN MTB Championships at Cascades, Pietermaritzburg last weekend.

Burry Stander and Candice Neethling were crowned the respective men’s and women’s KZN MTB Champions.

Stander rode consistently over the eight laps of a similar course to that which was used for the UCI MTB World Cup in April. His times ranged between 13 mintues and second to 13 minutes and 30 seconds to clock an accumulated time of 1:46:52 for the eight lapper.

Second place went to Andrew Warr (1:53:44) with Andrew Hill (1:54:48) claiming third in the Elite category. The women’s champion was decided from the U23 category and it was Neethling who showed her form and class to break the tape in 1:22:29 for the five lap race. Cherise Taylor was a worthy runner-up finishing on 1:28:36.

The U23 men saw Travis Walker claim a convincing victory (1:58:57) ahead of Jedson Tooms (2:08:19) and Hilton Frost (2:08:43).

Amongst the age-groups, the respective winners were — Nedene Cahill and Hendrik Bester (Sub-Veteran), Nataschka Mowat and Marc Adam (Veteran), Liz Alexander and Rob Hamlyn (Master), Ashleigh Parker-Moffatt and Luke Roberts (Junior), Savannah Schuit and Alan Hatherly (Youth), Mikaela Jonsson and Julian Jessop (Sub-Junior), Tiffany Keep and Cameron Wright (Sprogs), Sabine Thies and Cwynton Collett (Nippers).

The Fox King of the Dirt MTB race took place in the chilly midlands town of Mooi River last weekend. Sub-veteran Warren Price showed that dedicated training through winter pays off as he claimed the honours in the 40 km Classic.

Price crossed the finish line in 1:52:06 with Paul Austin claiming second (1:52:50) and Klaas Meintjes third (1:54:37).

Melanie Palframan took the honours in the women’s race (2:20:23) with sub-veteran Jean Hackland second (2:25:49) and master Nicky Green third (2:42:33).

Thinus van Niekerk (1:08:39) and Youth rider Rochelle van Eck (1:23:19) were the respective winners of the 20 km race.

For a new event taking pace in winter in one of KZN’s coldest regions, the Fox King of the Dirt race attracted over 250 entrants.

Coming up next weekend (July 31) is the Nashua Hluhluwe Rhino Charge MTB event in Zululand.

Three race distances on offer are 50 km Classic, 25 km Intermediate and 10 km Fun Ride. Pre-entries close on www.roag.co.za on July 27. Timing by Elite Timing. T-shirts to the first 400 online entries.
