SA’s big guns roll in for the Royal Show

2008-05-21 00:00

A massive South African G6 artillery system was spotted rolling into Pietermaritzburg this past week by a few concerned residents, who suddenly thought that the town might be under siege.

The gun, along with other military hardware and 40 soldiers is part of the SANDF’s display at the Royal Agricultural Show, said Staff Sergeant Johan Kruger.

The staff will be available for a chat during the show, which starts tomorrow and ends on June 1.

The weaponry on show includes a G5, a G6 and a multiple rocket launcher.

And even though no shots will be fired, their size and strength alone is enough to impress.

An SAAF Rooivalk combat support helicopter will be flying in tomorrow and pilots from the SAAF will wow audiences with their flying.

Something else to do at the defence force site is to go on a guided tour of the Namakura (the South African Navy’s vessel) and also check out the dive tank where Navy divers will be showing off their diving skills.

Youth are also encouraged to investigate the defence force recruitment programme if they have ever entertained the idea of training to become a soldier, sailor or member of the air force.
