SafeCity helps cops spot two robbers in city centre

2014-12-18 00:00

SAFECITY video footage helped police to apprehend two suspects who were spotted on camera robbing a man at an ATM at the Rhino Centre on Tuesday night.

Lennox Nkhahle was withdrawing money when he was approached by the two at 9.39 pm while using an ATM at the centre on Pietermaritz Street.

The Witness has learnt that Nkhahle was approached by the men who threatened him with a knife and demanded that he withdraw an amount of R5 000. The two took the money and his cellphone and fled the scene not realising that they were caught on camera and police had already been alerted by SafeCity about their behaviour.

Police spokesperson Captain Zenzele Ndlovu said both men appeared in the magistrate’s court yesterday facing robbery charges.

The court results were unknown.

“Police who were patrolling in that area responded to the complaint and arrested the two men, but only the cellphone was recovered,” he said.

SafeCity spokesperson Jason Herbert said police responded timeously.
