Safety Drive: 90 KZN taxi drivers vie for finals

2008-07-23 00:00

This week, 90 taxi drivers from five districts in KwaZulu-Natal undergo practical testing of Phase Two of the Number One Taxi Driver Campaign.

The campaign is funded mainly by alcoholic drinks company Brandhouse, sponsored partly by Toyota and supported by the department of Transport. Brandhouse spokeswoman Priscilla Singh said the taxi drivers will compete to reach the regional finals.

The regional winner will be announced in September and represent his province at the national finals in Gauteng in October. The national winner will drive off in a new Toyota minibus, she said.

The campaign began in 2004 in 33 taxi ranks in four provinces and has grown into a national event covering 431 taxi ranks. Over 150 000 entry forms have come in from taxi drivers.
