Safety warning: Paraffin stoves

2008-06-11 00:00

Consumers have been warned not to buy paraffin stoves and heaters branded Karona and Fujica, sold and distributed under Pulse Holdings, as they do not comply with a compulsory specification.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) said yesterday that inspectors discovered this last week as they were doing random surveillance. “Samples of these products were taken for testing at SABS laboratories. On discovering that the products did not comply, the owner was told to stop selling and a directive to that effect was issued to the owner of the company.” On the second visit to the company, the products were all removed from the shop.

Thomas Madzivhe, senior manager at SABS, said the owner claimed that there was a break-in at his factory and all the stoves were stolen.

“Even though the owner did prove to SABS that he reported the matter to police and to his insurance company, inspectors in collaboration with relevant investigating bodies are tracing the whereabouts of the products, as they are unsafe for human use.” He appealed to anyone involved in marketing, distributing or selling this product to cease immediately, as it is illegal to sell non-compliant products, especially paraffin stoves and heaters as they have a potential to cause fire hazards.
