Saftas: ‘Karoo’ is best short film

2011-02-23 00:00

THE debut short film Karoo produced by Pietermaritzburg-born television producer Fazila Wahab and her partner Oliver Kohl won the award for best short film at the 2011 South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

Karoo was inspired by a famous South African legend about a female ghost hitchhiking on the highways and roads of the Karoo.

Some motorists have given her lifts, then reported her disappearing out of their cars, while others have seen her appearing on the backs of motorcycles, clinging on to the unaware riders.

The award was just one of many handed out at the ceremony for non-fiction category winners on Sunday. Winners in the fiction categories will be announced next Sunday, February 27.

Another popular winner was Curious Pictures, which took home the prize for best factual entertainment programmes for A Country Imagined. The documentary series about paintings inspired by South African landscapes was hosted by Johnny Clegg and broadcast on SABC2. The series’ director, John Trengove, also received a special mention from the Safta committee for his work.

The biggest winner was the wildlife documentary Into The Dragon’s Lair, which brought the awards for best wildlife programme, best wildlife director and best wildlife cinematographer awards for Craig Foster and a best wildlife cinematographer award for Damon Foster. The series also got two special Safta mentions for music and sound for Kevin Smuts and Barry Donnelley.
