Sanco tells Mbeki to account

2008-01-08 00:00

The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has accused President Thabo Mbeki of defying the new ANC leadership by, among other things, taking unilateral decisions.

Sanco spokesman Dumisani Mthalane said the appointment of the SABC board by Mbeki and the timing of the decision to recharge ANC president Jacob Zuma was reason enough for the ANC to make sure that the government remains accountable to the party.

“If left unchecked, the state machinery can indeed directly and indirectly undermine the role of the ANC as a leading force for fundamental change in our society.”

He accused the NPA of pursuing a “political vendetta” against Zuma, adding that Mbeki’s handling of the matter had been “unfair and vindictive”.

“Even his power of reasoning has been inconsistent … ” he said.

Mthalane said his organisation will embark on mass action should the state fail to account to the ruling party.

“Sanco could only hope that … Mbeki … will not allow a new set of political conditions that could propel us into mass action.”

Mthalane said the way in which Mbeki is handling the issues around Zuma has the potential to plunge the country into “political and economic crisis”.
