Sando back in form

2014-04-17 00:00

SOME interesting results popped up in the second round of the Durban Central Football Association’s Premier League at the weekend, with Juventus sitting at the top of the log once the dust had settled.

Having lost in the opening round to Westville Old Boys’, last season’s runners up Sando returned to winning ways against AmaZulu at Currie’s Fountain.

Sando seemed to be out of sight and have the game in the bag after strikes from Shabani Akeza, Ayanda Masikane and Thami Nkosi — the latter from the penalty spot. But Steve Bezuidenhout’s young charges, who had let slip a 3-0 advantage against Riverside the previous week to share the points, came back strongly through two strikes by Ntuthuko Majozi.

In the end, the clock won the day and Sando took the points with a 3-2 win.

Juventus looked strong with another clinical performance, this time against Newlands at Stromia Road, winning 3-1 — goals coming from Byron Albert, Calvin Luthuli and Jean-Marie Ntsengiyuma.

The win was enough to keep the “Italians” on top of the standings, a spot they share with a rampant Albert Park side who dispatched Riverside 5-2 at Albert Park — goals scored by Peter Olayemi, Sandile Sithole, Simo Nkendla, Azola Smawo and Anele Melane. Riverside’s strikes came from a brace of quality goals by Boniface “Fire” Mwala.

The match was a carbon copy of Riverside’s opening encounter against AmaZulu, the Durban North side finding themselves 3-0 down with 20 minutes remaining.

Mwala pulled two back but, in pushing for the equaliser, Riverside exposed themselves at the back, resulting in easy pickings for the hungry Albert Park goalscorers.

Other results saw Villa Park and Westville Old Boys draw 0-0, Friends and Hearts draw 0-0, Stars and Stella draw 1-1 and Coronation beating New Orleans 1-0.

Albert Park and Juventus top the log with six points each, having won both matches to date. Albert Park are ahead on goal difference after two convincing performances. Villa Park and Westville have four points each and New Orleans, Sando and Coronation, with one win each, have three points.

Six teams make up the rest of the table, all with a single point to their credit.
