Saru stalled: six teams into five won’t go

2012-05-18 00:00

TO the surprise of no one, the SA Rugby Union (Saru) were yesterday unable to resolve the problem of how to accommodate the Southern Kings in next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Saru’s top officials yesterday held a meeting with the Kings and delegates from the five current franchises (Sharks, Bulls, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions) to discuss how to squeeze six teams into five places.

Nothing was resolved and a second meeting will be held on Monday.

Sanzar allows only five teams in each conference, but Saru have already promised the Kings a place in next year’s competition.

Saru want automatic relegation (with the Lions seemingly doomed), but they are now looking for some magical compromise to keep all six franchises happy.

“Everyone has agreed that we must secure a solution that does not damage any of the existing franchises,” Saru CEO Jurie Roux said yesterday. “It is a complex issue with no easy answer and we are determined to leave no stone unturned in finding that answer.

“A number of options were discussed but there is currently no preferred alternative to recommend to the general council.”

Roux added that a decision on the Super Rugby participation dilemma will be ratified by the Saru general council in a meeting to be held on July 13.
