Sassa: Employee in court for bribe

2012-09-03 00:00

A SOUTH African Social Security Agency (Sassa) employee and her alleged accomplice appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on Friday after allegedly trying to solicit a bribe from a 55-year-old woman earlier this month.

Sassa official Gezekile Mthembu (33) allegedly told Niniza Mncube (55) that she had to pay R2 000 to Sibusiso Mncwango, who works at a furniture retailer in Nongoma, in order to start receiving a grant.

However, Mncube reported the matter to the police, who set up a sting operation and nabbed Mthembu and Mncwango. The matter was remanded to September 15 for the state to finalise its investigation.

Mncube told The Witness that she was worried about receiving her pension so she was willing to pay the R2 000.

“It was only after I told my nephew about this that I learnt it was illegal.”

Sassa spokesperson Mbizeni Mdlalose said an internal disciplinary process would be instituted against Mthembu.
