Saved: Woman jumps off bridge into Dorpspruit stream

2011-07-30 00:00

A WOMAN jumped off a bridge in Ohrtmann Road into the Dorpspruit yesterday but was swiftly rescued by quick-witted bystanders.

One witness said the woman had earlier been walking with her boyfriend and then suddenly jumped in what appeared to be a suicide attempt.

“She is so lucky to be alive. Only God knows what could have happened to her if those men didn’t save her,” said one bystander.

“I was driving past … when I saw her leaning on the railing bars. She then jumped into the river,” said another witness.

Bystanders waded into the stream and pulled her out “by her pants”.

The distance from the bridge to the water is about six metres.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said, “The patient incurred spine injuries and she was also hypothermic because the water was cold and she is in a serious condition.”

The parademics said if she had not been pulled out she would have drowned.
