Saved: hitching rail removed

2008-12-07 00:00

Municipal manager Rob Haswell, with estates division employees Michael Mbhele (centre) and Herbert Madondo, who removed the damaged cast iron hitching rail outside the provincial parliamentary offices, formerly the Witness offices, on Langalibalele (Longmarket) Street.

The Witness reported last week that the protected historic structure was in danger of being stolen for scrap metal. Haswell, who has been unwell, moved quickly when alerted to the situation.

He said: ‘We have removed the hitching rail to prevent further damage and possible theft. We will obtain quotations for its repair, and consult with Amafa Heritage KZN and other stakeholders on funding and repair and possible relocation to a more protected, yet still relevant site. This hitching rail is one of the three which are still to be found in our central city area. The other two are outside the Imperial Hotel and in the forecourt of the Standard Bank in Church Street.’
