Scared kids (7) sit with dead mom till sunrise

2008-10-20 00:00

TWO seven-year-old children waited alone the whole night to report the murder of their mother, Mary Louise Visagie (38) after she was shot dead in a failed robbery at her Drummond home outside Durban on Friday.

Police spokeswoman Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said the murder is believed to have happened late on Friday, but was only reported to the police at about 7 am immediately after the children reported it to a neighbour.

“Apparently the children were too scared to go out to the neighbour at night and they waited for the morning,” said Veldhuizen.

Veldhuizen said it is alleged that the intruders gained access into Visagie’s home and demanded the keys to her car. While she was looking for the keys, a shot went off hitting her in the chest. She died at the scene. The intruders ran away after stealing Visagie’s cellphone, but left the vehicle behind.

Visagie and her former husband are well known in the hospitality and entertainment industry in KZN. The Visagies were prominent co-owners of a number of nightclubs and music businesses. There have been no arrests yet.
