Sccident: Lesotho man killed on building site

2011-07-29 00:00

A LESOTHO national was killed after falling from scaffolding while working on a construction site in Camperdown yesterday morning.

The incident has left colleagues of the deceased, who is only identified as Rasta, shocked. They stopped working immediately at noon.

Rasta worked for Selby Madonsela, who was sub-contracted by Buildrite Construction to put up the trusses. He had worked for three days.

They were putting up a truss on top of the roof of a shop in Shepstone Road when the incident happened. Said a worker, “We were lifting the truss up to the roof and he was holding it while standing on the scaffold. He fell and hit the ground with his head and he died at the scene. The truss also pushed us down.

“We are very shocked, and we could not continue working. I think even tomorrow we will take a day off in order to recover,” said Madonsela.

Madonsela said he has no information about Rasta and is trying to trace his family, who are believed to be in Lesotho.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said another worker was seriously injured. Police have opened an inquest docket.
