School demands payment

2014-12-09 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG school requested parents to pay a registration fee for 2015 when reports were collected last week Thursday to ease their “financial crisis”.

The Witness has learnt that parents at Woodlands Primary School were left surprised when they were told to pay R500 towards next year’s registration.

A source close to the school said the decision was taken two weeks ago at the school’s financial meeting, in an effort to help the school recover from its dire financial situation.

A parent, whose name is withheld to protect the identity of her child, said when she went to the school to collect her daughter’s report, she was told the report would only be issued on payment of the R500.

“It’s not fair. The school should not worry about next year’s registration …” she said.

Another parent who received her child’s report without paying the registration fee said she told them she will pay the R500 in January because she wasn’t told about this beforehand.

The source added that it is illegal to withhold pupils’ reports. He also said the registration fee was going to help pay the school governing body positions, cleaners and the electricity bills of the school.

The Department of Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, said he would engage with the school to get more details.
