School hockey: Glenwood ends season in style

2013-08-13 00:00

GLENWOOD have finished the school hockey season in fine style, winning 5-1 against Grey College in Bloemfontein on Friday.

This follows their first win in over a decade against Maritzburg College the previous week.

The visitors took a while to get accustomed to the pitch and the structured Grey pattern. The home side scored the first goal 10 minutes into the game, but Glenwood fought hard and found the net from a penalty corner towards the end of the half to level the scores. In a cross ball from the stop, Andile Phehlukwayo caught the goalkeeper out of position to see the sides at 1-1 heading into the break.

Glenwood changed their style in the second half by pushing up midfielders. They scored two quick early goals that took some of the fight out of the opposition. James Dellis scored the first goal and Travis Bottomley the second one.

Phehlukwayo scored his second goal and Callan Pearce, normally a defender, was sent up into the circle late in the game, where he sent in a pile-driver for Glenwood’s final goal, and the 5-1 victory, in what has been a successful season for the Durban boys.
