School stabbing: victim ‘may not make it’

2009-10-16 00:00

AN 18-year-old youth who is charged with stabbing a fellow pupil at Woodlands Secondary School on Tuesday appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday

The victim is in a critical condition in hospital.

The accused, whose name is given as Kylin Freason on the charge sheet, is charged with attempted murder of Krishen Govender (18) at the school on Tuesday during a tea break.

State prosecutor Ricky van Wyk told the magistrate, Divesh Mootheram, that the charge could change to one of murder.

Van Wyk said that after he had indicated to the court that the investigating officer is not opposed to Freason being granted bail, he was approached by a family member, who said Govender is in a very serious condition in hospital “and may not make it”.

He added that the victim’s sister — who was traumatised and “hysterical” after witnessing the incident — attends the same school and is afraid of the accused returning to school.

Mootheram said that in these circumstances, he is not prepared to entertain an unopposed bail application without hearing evidence from the investigating officer. He postponed the case until today.
