Schoolboy jumps ahead of the rest in SA

WITH athletics battling bigger sports at school level, it’s rare to find a talent such as Anthony Mwang (17) from DHS.

Blessed with a talent to compliment the spring in his step, he headed for Stellenbosch recently, representing KwaZulu-Natal at the SA Youth and Junior Championships.

He took on long jump and triple jump and it was his skill in the latter that had people sitting up and taking notice of him.

Not the easiest athletic discipline, triple jump is all about getting in the zone, planning the jump, getting the strides right, maintaining balance and above all, finding the rhythm that could mean the difference between success and failure.

Anthony found it all when he needed to and it counted. He glided down the track, took flight and landed with a distance of 14,61 metres, good enough to be first in South Africa at U17 level.

It was good reward for the young man who remains focused and dedicated to his chosen sport, sacrificing time and effort to train and work on his technique.

It paid off in Stellenbosch and if he continues to produce more such results, the athletic world is his to conquer with who knows what opportunities and rewards await him.
