Schoolboy rugby to end with a bang

2013-08-03 00:00

THE curtain falls today on schoolboy rugby in the province with the last fixture’of an exciting season between Maritzburg College and Glenwood.

Although Glenwood do have one remaining fixture, it is at Grey College in Bloemfontein, while Maritzburg College will be playing their last match of the season.

For those who witnessed the first match between the two schools on Goldstones at College on their joint Old Boys reunion, it can only be a disappointment, as the rugby is unlikely to reach the epic proportions of the first game where Glenwood won 44-40.

Nevertheless, the rugby should rise above the ordinary as College will want a victory after they had to play with 14 players for more than half the game in the narrow loss and Glenwood will be determined to win their last match on Dixons in front of their home support and make it a double against their main Maritzburg rivals.

The College forwards have shown they can rise to the occasion as they have done in their last two matches against much heavier opposition. It is now up to the three quarters to up their game in defence and prevent the talented Glenwood backs from having too much freedom.

The two opposing teams have both played Affies over the last two Saturdays and both lost by almost the same margin. Affies beat College in Pretoria 51-20 and Affies beat Glenwood in Durban 53-23, with the difference being that Affies was at home against College and away against Glenwood

There is little doubt there will be some exhilarating rugby, excitement and massive forward exchanges with the winners being the team that wants it most and makes least mistakes.
