Schoolgirls battle it out

2012-05-01 00:00

A TOTAL of 314 schoolgirl hockey players in 25 district teams participated in the KZN Provincial Girls’ Tournament played on Maritzburg College’s Pape’s Astro, the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf and the Epworth pitch, with 13 teams in the U19 age group and 12 in the U16 age group battling it out to be crowned the provincial champions for the 2012 season.

In the U16 tournament, captain Hannah Moxham’s uMgungundlovu A side were unbeaten in the A Section.

It was only the uMgungundlovu B team that gave their A team a scare when they drew 1-1 in the challenge by the lower-ranked team. Other than that draw, the uMgungundlovu A squad won all their other matches.

Sisonke district (the Kokstad area) won the B Section and will be promoted to the A Section next year.

The highest goalscorer in the U16 tournament was uMgungundlovu and Treverton player Danielle Cairns, who netted eight goals in the five matches.

In the U18 tournament, it was plain sailing for Kirsty Gibbings and Pinetown A, who won all their matches to become the KZN champions for 2012.

Amajuba district (the Newcastle area) won the B Section and will be promoted to the A Section next year.

The highest goal scorer in the U18 tournament was Pinetown and St Mary’s Lee Carvalho, with seven goals.
