2010-09-09 00:00

THE 2010 Witness Nelson Mandela Schools Speech Contest will take place as planned this year on Tuesday, September 21, (English section) and Wednesday, September 22, (isiZulu section).

The competition commences at 9 am in the Victoria Hall at Maritzburg College.

Contestants should arrive at 8.30 am to allow time for registration.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided to contestants, supporters and teachers during the day.

To date, 24 schools have entered. In view of the disruptions at schools this year, the closing date for schools to enter has been extended to Monday, September 13.

Schools wishing to enter should contact Nqobile Cebekhulu at 033 392 3630, fax 086 219 2161, or e-mail her at nqobile.cebekhulu@msunduzi.gov.za.

The contest is organised by The Witness in co-operation with the Msunduzi Municipality and with the support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The first prize in each language category is R10 000, with two prizes of R2 000 each for the two runners-up in each language category. A further prize of R5 000 is offered by the Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg to the most deserving entry.

The prize giving will take place on Friday, October 8, at the Tatham Art Gallery at 5.30 pm. Safe parking is available next to the gallery.
