Schools’ cricket: City-to-city clashes feature three big sides

2008-10-24 00:00

The Independent Schools are taking their half-term break this weekend and there is again a reduction in the number of school cricket fixtures.

There are only three matches involving the bigger cricket-playing schools, one in Pietermaritzburg and the other two in Durban.

Goldstones at Maritzburg College is the venue for the match between College and Glenwood. During the first term, College struggled and lost by five wickets against the Durban side, away on Dixons.

It was the superior batting by the Glenwood pair of Shahil Ramdin and Cody Chetty, both recently selected for the KZN Coastal U18 team, that won the game for Glenwood.

College will be buoyed by their comprehensive victory against Hilton last Saturday.

Northwood will host Durban High School in another return match. During the first term, it was DHS who won comfortably. Northwood have had only one win this year — against Westville at the end of the first term — and they have an uphill battle today.

Westville travel to play against Clifton, a side who surprisingly beat them in the first term. This will make Westville more committed to ensure they get a good win today. The pressure will be on Cameron Delport, not only for him to have a good match with both bat and ball, but also to lead his side well.

Clifton’s Kishun Kushen, selected for the KZN Coastal team, will be keen to capture a number of wickets, as he did in the first match. If Clifton win the second match, it will place them in the top nine in the province, ahead of Northwood.

One of the more keenly contested games among the second-tier schools will be at Kloof, who host Carter. The Maritzburg side lost this match played during the first term, and will be keen to reverse the decision.

Wartburg won most of their games in the first term and travel to play against Voortrekker, who lost most of their matches. One match that Voortrekker won was against Wartburg — a narrow victory — and Wartburg will have an incentive to win.

Howick will be playing their first match of the term as they had a bye the first Saturday, and last week their match was cancelled due to bad weather. In the first term they were unbeaten and they will attempt to maintain the unbeaten record away at Treverton. The host side have won both games played this term, albeit by one run against Weston. This may give them the advantage today.

Selected fixtures (home side first): Maritzburg College v Glenwood; Northwood v DHS; Clifton v Westville; Kloof v Carter; Voortrekker v Wartburg; Treverton v Howick; Weston v MCS; Crawford v Gelofte; Pinetown v George Campbell; St Henrys v Hillcrest; Amanzimtoti v Durban Clubs.
