Schools cricket vs the rain

2009-10-17 00:00

How often does the cricket season also herald rain over the weekend? It certainly did in areas in KwaZulu-Natal on the first weekend of the term and almost all matches were cancelled. Although rain is again forecast, schools will be hoping that they can get some cricket played.

After matches at the end of last term and at Michaelmas Week, two schools appear to be ahead of the others — Kearsney and Maritzburg College. Both schools will be playing in the midlands, Kearsney against Michaelhouse and College against Hilton.

During the first term, Michaelhouse were saved from a likely defeat by Kearsney due to bad light. Kearsney will want to again put their hosts under pressure and with the competent batting line-up and a well balanced attack they will be the favoured side in Balgowan today.

College will also be playing a second match against Hilton after beating them during the first term. This will give them the psychological advantage, but Hilton will be determined to improve on their efforts so far this season. If they do not then the young College team will likely have another win.

Glenwood, one of the few teams to play last weekend, will be hosting Westville. The home team has played 6 matches this season winning 4 of the games and losing the other two. Westville has also played 6 matches but won only one losing the others. This will make Glenwood the more confident team and likely to add another win to their list.

DHS travel to play against St Charles and they need a good performance to restore some confidence in the team. At Michaelmas Week they did win one game, losing the other three. The win was against St Davids, arguably the weakest of the visiting teams. St Charles started shakily, but then improved and if the progress continues today then it will be another difficult day for the Durban visitors.

Clifton, who have being playing the top teams in the province will have an easier match when they play Thomas More. The latter has had some good results amongst the second tier schools but with the experience gained by Clifton against the better teams, they should be the favoured team. However Clifton cannot afford to be complacent.

Selected fixtures (home side first): Michaelhouse vs Kearsney; Hilton vs Maritzburg College; Glenwood vs Westville; St Charles vs DHS; Thomas More vs Clifton; Hillcrest vs Kloof; Weston vs Carter; George Campbell vs St Henrys; Treverton vs Howick; Wartburg vs Voortrekker; Crawford LL vs Durban & Districts
