Schools’ cricket week under way in PMB

2009-09-25 00:00

THE sun shone after a few miserable days and the 16 sides at the 50th Oppenheimer Michaelmas Week were able to get a full day’s cricket, although the side bowling first in most of the matches did have an advantage.

Hosts Maritzburg College got the week off to a good start with a convincing seven-wicket win against Hudson Park.

Hilton threw away a great chance of victory against Grey College after bowling them out, with Nathan Roberts capturing six wickets. Kearsney had a great win against Affies and Michaelhouse won comfortably by seven wickets against St Davids.

Most of the excitement on the first day resulted in narrow losses for Hilton and DHS against Grey College and St Johns respectively.

At the halfway stage, Hilton were looking comfortable at 100 for one in reply to the Grey total of 173. They collapsed, however, to be 170 all out. DHS were in a similarly good position at 111 for four, but then lost three wickets without adding a run, and with spinner Devon Conway taking five wickets, were all out four runs short of the target.

Pretoria Boys beat Glenwood by four wickets, St Stithians had a convincing seven-wicket victory over Westville and KES beat St Charles by 48 runs.

The top batting performances were by Mark van Heerden (Michaelhouse) with an undefeated 88, 75 by Matthew Pillans from PBHS and College’s Dean Pengelley with 73 not out. Michaelmas Cricket Week scores in brief:
