Science: Pacemaker pooch well

2008-04-21 00:00

You can’t keep a good dog down, and Rupert the Staffordshire terrier with a newly fitted pacemaker, is a prime example of that.

Rupert, who had a R40 000 pacemaker fitted by Howick vet Dr Martin d’Scally on Friday as reported by Weekend Witness, is well on his way to recovery.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, D’Scally said the biggest problem now is trying to keep Rupert calm. “He’s ready to run. It’s really fantastic and we are thrilled. You can’t believe it’s the same dog.”

He said that Rupert would in all likelihood be allowed home today.

Thrilled owner Bev McKenzie said the difference in Rupert is remarkable. “He is so exuberant now. When Dr d’Scally called to report on Rupert’s progress, we could hear Rupert … shrieking to be let out of his cage … ”

Medical supplier Medtronic donated a pacemaker to Rupert to correct his heart block, to give the ailing canine a new lease on life.
