Scores line up for Spar Woman’s race

2014-08-22 00:00

THERE was quite a buzz yesterday at the registration tent at Suncoast Casino for the upcoming Spar Women’s 10/5 km race as women lined up to book their spot in Sunday’s races.

Runners of all levels took their turn signing up for the race that will see them go from Masabala Yengwa Avenue all the way to Blue Lagoon and back to the finish line at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium.

Even before manual registration began yesterday, over 10 000 athletes had signed up online to take on the Durban race.

Although the race gives most women the opportunity to go out and have some fun, there will be some serious competition as the it forms part of the Spar Grand Prix, which is an amalgamation of results from all the Spar running races around the country.

As it stands, Diana Lebo Phalula is leading the current log after two successive victories in the Grand Prix.

However, last year’s defending champion Mapaseka Makhanya is second on the overall standings while Olympic runner Rene Kalmer is third on the log.

Another Olympian, Irvette van Zyl, is touted to do well after recording a fast 32 minutes and 20 seconds finish at the 10 km Totalsports Ladies’ Race in Stellenbosch two weeks ago.

If you missed registration yesterday, you can still do so today and tomorrow.

Registration starts at 10 am and runs until 5 pm today while tomorrow it’s from 10 am to 3 pm.

The 10 km race begins at 8 am on Sunday while the five kilometre race starts at 9 am.
