Scottsville man badly hurt in 18 m fall

2012-09-24 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man is fighting for his life in hospital after plunging nearly 18 metres from the balcony of an apartment on the seventh floor of the Nedbank Plaza Building late on Saturday night.

Kyle Mclean (24) is said to have fallen from the balcony on the seventh floor after a fight with his brother. The brothers live with their mother in the flat.

Ramon Mclean said he had had a fight with his brother.

“I don’t really know what happened. We had gotten into a fight and I had hit him. My mother got in between us and broke up the fight and she sent me outside to cool down.”

He said that he returned a short while later to find that his brother had fallen from the balcony.

“I thought they had called the ambulance because I had hit him; they didn’t want to tell me what had really happened.”

He said his brother was on life support in Grey’s Hospital.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said Mclean landed on the rooftop of a restaurant on the ground floor.

“The man sustained critical injuries and was fighting for his life. He was stabilised at the scene by paramedics and then rushed by ambulance to hospital.”

Banks said Mclean was lucky to be alive considering the height of the fall.
